Master of Engineering of Atmosphere, Water and Urban Environment (STEU)



This Master offers a world-class education to future outstanding engineers and town planners by providing the skills necessary to solve environmental and energy issues through an integrated approach, combining technological development together with the consideration of human, social and urban constraints.



The programme is designed to provide scientific knowledge and tools through advanced lectures and research work in recognized and renowned research laboratories.

The Master programme is fully recognized by the French Ministry of Higher Education and the network of contacts established by the researchers engaged in the programme guarantees international exposure for the students. The programme of study lasts two years..

All courses are taught and all examinations are held in English during the 1st year, which is complemented by 160 hours of French language courses.
During the 2nd year, courses are in French, but the Master's thesis can be either in French or English.



This Master's programme is managed by the world-class Institute for Research on Urban Sciences and Techniques (IRSTV - http://www.irstv.fr/en) and focuses on understanding and solving problems of Urban Atmosphere, more particularly in Urban Hydrology, Soils, Pollution, Energetics Challenges, Micro-Meteorology and Micro-Climate, relying on numerical modeling, wind tunnel experiments and field experiment campaigns.

The research laboratories are totally integrated into the educational programme of the school to ensure study-through-research for Master's students while enriching their training by giving them access to inductive pedagogies in the laboratories and enabling those who start their career in R&D to prepare for their future responsibilities.

The DAUC group is also a (founding) member of IRSTV or "Institute for Research on Urban Sciences and Techniques", which is a Research Federation founded by CNRS (French National Center for Scientific Research) and France's Ministry of Research. IRSTV leads an interdisciplinary research in the field of urban environment and the research program more specially concerns the development of knowledge, models, tools and methodologies for the management, the design, the decision-making and the evaluation of city planning policies.


Almost every year, PhD opportunities are available in the DAUC group. Here are some examples of just completed or ongoing PhD projects in the DAUC group:

  • The Influence of Urban Morphologic Parameters on Climate Variables along a Urban-rural Gradient in order to measure the Impacts of the Urban Climate on the Biodiversity.
  • Assessment and improvement of the numerical modeling of the unsteady flow developing over the urban canopy
  • Unsteady interaction between the lower-atmosphere and the urban-canopy: insights from wind tunnel experiments

Conditions d'admission

Applicants must hold a Bachelor of Engineering or a Bachelor of Science.

A degree in engineering is a plus as the 1st year courses are related to fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, thermal exchanges, hydrology and computer programming. Applicants must be familiar with calculus and algebra.

A good background in mathematics and physics is compulsory.

Applicants must be fluent in English, (written and oral communication). An applicant whose native language is not English is required to pass a recognized international English test such as the TOEFL or equivalent. The minimum requested level is C1.

There is no French level requirement as the 1st year courses are taught in English. Nevertheless, French language skills are always appreciated as the 2d year courses are taught in French.

A strong interest and motivation in environmental issues, related to urban area/cities are taken into account during the selection committee.

Organisation générale des études

The duration of the Master of Engineering in Atmosphere, Water and Urban Environment courses is two academic years (120 ECTS credits), split into four semesters with 30 ECTS credits for each.

All the courses are taught in Centrale Nantes.

Extra courses can be offered in specific fields.

During the 2 years, several projects, reviews and introduction to research about urban realities review are carried out.
 

FIRST YEAR

The language of instruction and examination of the first year is English.

Basic courses are offered to provide students a strong background about the physical processes faced in environmental problems. Additional courses about cities, their history and the related sociological aspects, planning and management are included in the study programme.

MASTER THESIS

The placement lasts 6 months and takes place during the 4th semester. It is usually carried out in research labs or institutes that work on environmental issues.

Students are encouraged to find internship by themselves, to prepare them to find a research position or a job after the Master's course. Contacts and internship offers from the Centrale Nantes partners will be provided.

Interns are very often integrated in French or international research teams within a broader research project and therefore benefit from this dynamical research environment. Interns are encouraged to be involved in or perform original research work in collaboration with their supervisor. Successful internships sometimes lead to publications in specialized journal.

At the end of the internship, a master thesis is written and an oral defense performed, usually in September.
