Seawater desalination: tested in Centrale Nantes ocean test facilities

The Centrale Nantes ocean test facilities hosted Oneka for tests on a desalinator within the framework of MaRINET2.

on February 23, 2018

Oneka is a Quebec-based engineering company that is developing a system to desalinate seawater by harnessing wave energy. The Oneka team has been working on this technology since 2012. A unit capable of delivering 10 000 litres of water a day has been designed and tested. A second version is currently being tested at sea, in Florida.

To complement their field experience, Oneka conducted a series of tests in the hydrodynamic and ocean engineering test tank benefitting from the expertise of the Centrale Nantes team.

These tests took place in the framework of the European project Marinet2, in December 2017.

The objective of these tests was to acquire experimental data to:

  • validate the digital model,
  • compare the performance of 4 forms of floats,
  • optimize the hydraulic system
  • estimate the maximum forces in extreme conditions.
