Jointly developed by Centrale Nantes, the University of Nantes and the History Museum of Nantes "Castle of the Dukes of Brittany", the multimedia device "NANTES 1900" was officially opened to the public on 17 September 2015 in the presence of Johanna Rolland, Mayor of Nantes.
Florent Laroche, Centrale Nantes researcher at the IRCCyN Laboratory (Research Institute of Communication and Cybernetics of Nantes), runs this project involving museum, heritage and digital,  an  bringing together 3D engineering and museography.

His research team has been working for over ten years in this interdisciplinary field. The "Nantes 1900" device is one of its outcomes.

This multitouch device, based on the model of the port of Nantes made for the Universal Exhibition of 1900, provides access to a knowledge base describing the territory of the port at the dawn of the 20th century. Three large format touchscreens are available to visitors, their navigation choices are illustrated by light signals on the model.

3-D
The use of 3D is is no longer the sole preserve of motion pictures or gaming. 3D  has integrated all the intellectual and physical activity in our daily lives be they personal or professional.
The museum community has not escaped this trend. It is led by two points of view:
  • historical capitalization for the purposes of scientific understanding of our industrial heritage
  • extension to the general public
