OCEAN DEMO

The new Interreg NWE Ocean DEMO project was launched in January 2019. It provides funding to test sites to facilitate access for developers of marine renewable energy technologies to test their products or services in real-life conditions.

Ocean DEMO is a €13 million project. Ocean DEMO is expected to stimulate innovation in ocean energy and to develop technologies up to real-life testing of several machines, including free access to the network of test centres in Europe, one of the largest in the world:
  •     EMEC - European Marine Energy Centre, UK – Project leader
  •     DMEC - Dutch Marine Energy Centre, Netherlands
  •     Centrale Nantes / SEM-REV, France
  •     BLUEWISE MARINE - Ireland

In order to boost the market, Ocean DEMO will develop an information system about the potential of ocean energies for investors, and raise awareness among company managers of the political context necessary to develop these technologies. Major project developers will also be able to benefit from test site feedback on the specific challenges of ocean energy.

Ocean Demo is funded by the Interreg North West Europe (NWE) programme, which is part of the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

Ocean DEMO follows on from the success of the FORESEA project, which supported the testing of unique prototypes at sea. FORESEA has helped to prove the potential of Marine Renewable Energies, with 26 technologies deployed.
