Centrale Nantes at the "Nuit Blanche des Chercheurs" 2023

Join us on Thursday 2 February 2023 at Stereolux, Hall 6 West. For this new edition of the "Nuit Blanche des Chercheurs" in Nantes on the theme "Vibrations". Come along and discover the buzzing world of research in Nantes! Centrale Nantes' research teams will give presentations on themes ranging from Marine Renewable Energies to earthquakes and the properties of explosions!

On February 2, 2023 from 18:00 To 23:59

MINI CONFERENCES | STÉRÉOLUX + HALL 6 OUEST | 6 - 11 pm

  • Seisms & Renewable Energy // 7.10pm > 7.25pm // STEREOLUX Micro room // Research Institute in Civil and Mechanical Engineering (GeM) and Centrale Nantes
    • In order to tackle climate change, technologies such as deep geothermal energy or underground storage of H2 and CO2 are showing great promise. However, they face a major obstacle: earthquakes, as interaction with the subsoil to inject fluids into it triggers seismic phenomena. How can this seismicity be avoided and energy production be guaranteed at the same time?
  • BINGO ON THE WATER // 9.15pm > 9.45pm // Hall 6 West // Centrale Nantes and the SEM-REV offshore test site team
    • Lulled by the waves or swaying with wind in the blades, come along and discover the jobs that make us tick! A serious, but not too serious game, to learn more about marine renewable energies and how research is carried out on an offshore test site. Fill in your bingo grid and go fishing for words. The prize: surprise prizes and the chance to shine in society!

3 WORKSHOPS | STÉRÉOLUX | 6 to 11 pm

  • THE PHYSICS OF SEISMIC ACTIVITY // Research Institute in Civil and Mechanical Engineering (GeM) and Centrale Nantes
    • How do buildings get destroyed? What waves cause tsunamis? In their experiments, the researchers show the role of friction at the level of seismic faults and the role of the elasticity of rocks at depth. Discover the cause of earthquakes and stay on the surface of the Earth to observe the slightest vibrations.
  • EXPLOSIONS, VIBRATIONS & HERITAGE // Research Institute in Civil and Mechanical Engineering (GeM) and Centrale Nantes
    • Over the last few decades, our historical monuments have been subjected to explosive loading. Is it safe to make an explosion in a laboratory? Test yourself as a researcher to learn more about the properties of explosions and their propagation, through videos and original experiments.
  • HOW TO CONTROL EARTHQUAKES // Research Institute in Civil and Mechanical Engineering (GeM) and Centrale Nantes
    • Earthquakes are destructive phenomena that have occurred throughout human history. The researchers present a system that explains the propagation of vibrations through a continuous medium. With your new knowledge, it is up to you to decide: can earthquakes be controlled?

2 WORKSHOPS | HALL 6 OUEST | 6 to 11 pm

  • ALL ABOUT THE BRAIN // Laboratory of Digital Sciences of Nantes (LS2N) // CNRS - Nantes Université
    • Alpha, Beta, Theta, Delta and Gamma… it's all Greek to you? Think again! These are the waves that make your brain vibrate, at any given moment. Put your grey matter to work and try to recognise the different cognitive states, without confusing dreams with reality.
  • EXPLORING THE VIRTUAL AND ACOUSTICS // Laboratory of Digital Sciences of Nantes (LS2N) // CNRS - Nantes Université
    • Timbale, conga, darbouka, taiko... All musical cultures have their drums. To understand them in all their diversity, researchers at Nantes University are developing an interactive simulation environment. Enter a multisensory universe and explore with the researchers the interaction between human and machine.
