Gerasimos Theotokatos, visiting professor at Centrale Nantes hosted by the LHEEA laboratory

Gerasimos Theotokatos the DNV Professor of Safety of Marine Systems at the Maritime Safety Research Centre (MSRC) of the Department of Naval Architecture, Ocean & Marine Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. He is visiting the Research Laboratory in Hydrodynamics, Energetics & Atmospheric Environment (LHEEA) from 17 to 23 May 2026.

Gerasimos Theotokatos is also Director of the Maritime Safety Research Centre (MSRC), a world-class centre of excellence with a vision to shape the maritime safety, which was established as a significant Industry-University partnership involving the University of Strathclyde, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and DNV Classification Society.

Theotokatos will visit the Decarbonisation & Depollution of Energy Systems (D2SE) team at the Laboratory in Hydrodynamics, Energetics & Atmospheric Environment (LHEEA) at the invitation of Jonas Thiaucourt, senior lecturer at Centrale Nantes.

During his stay at the LHEEA, Gerasimos Theotokatos will take part in various research activities:

  • Participation as an external examiner for Chuma Ncobo’s PhD thesis
  • Joint presentation of research activities with a view to identifying opportunities for collaboration, particularly within the framework of Interreg-type projects
  • Discussions regarding hosting the next edition of the leading conference Modelling and Optimisation of Ship Energy Systems (MOSES) at Centrale Nantes, chaired by Professor Theotokatos

Gerasimos Theotokatos will also be speaking to degree apprenticeship students in Ocean Engineering and to maritime engineering students at ENSM as part of teaching activities on the following topics:

  • modelling of multi-fuel engines
  • the behaviour of marine engines under transient conditions
  • predictive maintenance
  • hybridisation of marine propulsion systems
