Nicolas Moës, 2019 recipient of the ONERA Award at the Institut de France - Académie des Sciences

Professor Nicolas Moës, of Centrale Nantes and senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France, received the 2019 ONERA Award for Mechanical Sciences for Aeronautics and Aerospace.

Dean of Research at Centrale Nantes until 2019 and senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France, Nicolas Moës is an expert in computational mechanics, who has made significant contributions in the field notably with extended finite elements (X-FEM) and the thick level set approach (TLS).

He received his award during a solemn ceremony under the Cupola of the Institut de France on 26 November 2019 during which the Académie des Sciences highlighted his contributions:

With regard to damage and rupture, he proposed modern methods, unavoidable in 3D cases, to simulate the advance of cracks without remeshing.
His work is widely cited in the academic world, and appreciated and used in industry.
