Event postponed to a later date (date t.b.a)

The "Girls, Mathematics and Computing days" (Les Journées Filles, Maths et Informatique : une équation lumineuse) are organised by femmes & mathématiques and Animath associations, with the help of the Fondation Blaise Pascal, and aim to encourage greater gender diversity in scientific and technical fields.

This year, two Centrale Nantes laboratories, the Jean Leray Laboratory of Mathematics and the Laboratory of Digital Sciences of Nantes (LS2N), are joining in this initiative and inviting 75 11th and 12th grade female pupils from the Caroline Aigle (Nort-sur-Erdre), Nicolas Appert (Orvault), Clemenceau (Nantes), Gaspard Monge-La Chauvinière (Nantes) and Jean Perrin (Rezé) high schools to participate in a one-day discussion.

The aim is to encourage girls to move beyond their perception of scientific and technical careers, not to underestimate their ambitions, and to open up the range of possible choices towards scientific careers.

The 75 female pupils from 5 high schools in Loire-Atlantique will be able to discuss their studies and professions in small groups with mathematicians and computer scientists, and reflect on the impact of stereotypes on their career choices and the lack of gender diversity in computer science and mathematics jobs.

Programme:

  • A computer science conference and a mathematics conference
  • Workshops on gender stereotypes in mathematics and computer science careers
  • A speed-meeting: meetings in small groups with female teachers, researchers, engineers, students etc.
  • A short play, by the LAPS/équipe du matin company, entitled Codée. It will address the sexist stereotyping that women may eexprience in the scientific fields. It will be followed by a dialogue between pupils and actors.
This event has been organised thanks to the support of numerous partners: Centrale Nantes, Nantes Université, UFR des sciences et techniques, le Centre Henri Lebesgue, le Jean Leray Laboratory of Mathematics, Laboratory of Digital Sciences of Nantes, Centrale Nantes, Académie de Nantes, la Maison des Mathématiques de l’Ouest, the European Commission, the Pays de la Loire region.
