Antonio HUERTA and Charbel FARHAT conferred with the title of Honorary Doctor by Centrale Nantes

Professor Antonio HUERTA and Prof. Charbel FARHAT were awarded the title of Honorary Doctor by Arnaud Poitou, director of Centrale Nantes, during the first International Workshop on Data in Digital Mechanics, held on the campus of Centrale Nantes.

on March 27, 2017

The discipline brought together the world's leading scientists on 27th, 28th and 29th March 2017 on the Centrale Nantes campus on the occasion of the first edition of this symposium on data in digital mechanics supported by its partners: Centrale Nantes, the University of Zaragoza, the Computational Structural Mechanics Association, NAFEMS and ESI Group.

Antonio Huerta is Professor of Applied Mathematics at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya-BarcelonaTECH. He obtained a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in 1987. He has held numerous visiting positions, in particular at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (Ispra), Centrale Nantes (FR), Swansea University (UK) and Chuo University (Japan). He has received several awards, among them, the Thomas A. Jaeger Prize by the International Association for Structural Mechanics in Reactor Technology (1989), the Prandtl Medal, in its first edition, from the European Community on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences (2008), and an Honorary Doctorate from the Université de Liège (2016).

His research interests are comprehensive in the area of computational methods in applied sciences and engineering. He has contributed to: the fundamentals of finite elements, mesh-free methods, error estimation and adaptivity, and reduced order models, as well as nonlinear computational solid mechanics, convection-dominated flow and incompressible flows. See www.lacan.upc.edu/huerta
He has served in numerous positions at the University (Dean, Chairman of the applied mathematics department, Board of trustees, Senate…), at governmental offices (viz. the Founding Academic Director of the Industrial Ph.D. Program for the Government of Catalonia) and for the computational mechanics community (Secretary General of the International Association of Computational Mechanics). He is now the Director of ICREA: www.icrea.cat.

Charbel Farhat is the Vivian Church Hoff Professor of Aircraft Structures in the School of Engineering at Stanford University, where he is also Chairman of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Professor in the Institute for Computational and Mathematical Engineering, Director of the Army High Performance Computing Research Center, and Director of the King Abdullah City of Science and Technology Center of Excellence for Aeronautics and Astronautics. He also serves on the United States Bureau of Industry and Security's Emerging Technology and Research Advisory Committee (ETRAC) at the United States Department of Commerce, on the United States Air Force Scientific Advisory Board (SAB), and on the technical assessment boards of several national and international research councils and foundations.

His research interests are aeroelasticity, CFD on moving grids, computational acoustics, computational mechanics, and high performance computing. In particular, he led the development of the Finite Element Tearing and Interconnecting (FETI) method for the scalable solution of large-scale systems of equations on massively parallel processors.

He has received numerous awards and academic distinctions from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Grand Prize from the Japan Society for Computational Engineering and Science (JSCES), the Gauss-Newton Medal and the IACM Award, among many others. He is a Member of the National Academy of Engineering, a Member of the Royal Academy of Engineering (International Fellow), a Member of the Lebanese Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of six international professional societies. He is also an Editor of the International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering, and the International Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids.
